The owl–shaped copper wire bookmark is shaped from copper wire by the skillful hands of Kenyan artisans in Kisumu. The paper backing is made from water hyacinth. The invasive plant species has plagued Lake Victoria and severely affected the livelihoods of fisherman. Innovative use of this nuisance plant for crafts, including papermaking, is contributing to the rehabilitation of Africa’s largest lake.

KICK is an acronym for Kisumu Innovation Centre Kenya. KICK started as a company limited that took over from the Non Governmental Organization in 2005. KICK is a social enterprise that works with the youth, women and young men in Kisumu – Kenya to recycle, reuse and innovate concepts around environmental sustainability.

Using recycled materials and invasive species from the wetlands around Lake Victoria in East Africa, KICK encourages local artisans to create hand made greeting cards, furniture and home decor. We also recycle copper wire from old fridge compressors, air conditioners, car alternators among others and use it to make unique greeting cards, wedding cards, gift bags, furniture among other unique items.
